Writing Term Paper

Written by: Free Term Papers

Writing term papers requires knowledge and adeptness in the basic mechanics of writing, idea development, research writing, and persuasiveness. Students may gain these skills for writing term paper projects through taking composition classes, or they may consult instructors, books, or academic services.

First, a student should learn basic writing skills. These include using proper subject-verb agreement (for example, using a singular noun with a singular verb), proper noun-pronoun agreement (for example, using a singular pronoun for a singular noun), and correct punctuation.

Second, students who are writing term papers must develop their ideas through the course of the paper. Writing term paper projects should include a solid thesis statement near the beginning, which condenses the entire argument into one strong sentence, followed by a point-by-point argument of what that idea is and why it is valid. Students have a difficult time producing good term papers if their ideas never mature, but they may avoid the problem of underdeveloped ideas by thinking intently about them as they conduct research and prepare to write.

Third, students must learn how to use their research well. They should read everything that they can find on the subject and should take careful notes; then, as they write term papers, they should use that research to buttress their points. Students may incorporate research sources into their papers by quoting them, paraphrasing them, or summarizing them. Another aspect of research writing is to cite the sources appropriately; in order to learn this skill, students should read their style manuals carefully to determine the identifying information that the citations should include.

Fourth, students must learn to write persuasively in order to convince readers that their term paper ideas are valid. This is a more ambiguous skill, but in essence it involves anticipating and quieting readers' objections. A student accomplishes this goal through knowing what the potential flaws or disagreements to the argument are, mentioning them in the paper, and explaining why those flaws or disagreements do not undermine the paper's idea.
