Writing a Term Paper

Written by: Free Term Papers

Writing a term paper is a task that involves developing an idea, researching it, and synthesizing that information into a single discussion.

Writing term papers can be a good experience or a bad experience, often depending on one's topic selection. In order to choose a good topic, one should first of all avoid worn-out, overused subjects; if one does choose a widely-discussed topic, he or she should specify a particular aspect or issue within that topic that can generate some new or unusual discussion. However, one should consider pursuing an obscure, creative topic; university instructors often enjoy term papers that discuss something different, and the student only needs to obtain approval from the instructor that the topic does relate in some way to the scope of the course and can conceivably produce a good term paper.

Second, writing a term paper is easier if one performs thorough research. The instructor may require students to cite a specific number of research sources while writing term papers, but students will benefit from reading at least a few more sources than the required number. This strategy allows students to eliminate sources that are not very useful or that stray significantly from the paper's discussion. Moreover, students who have read extensively within their topic range will be able to write term papers that have a more authoritative voice; they will be able to use all the topic's terminology easily and well and to understand and interact with the topic's typical controversies and issues.

Third, the most obvious part of writing term papers is the actual writing. Students should organize their thoughts ahead of time into an outline, whether rough or highly detailed, so that they may see how they wish to organize the information for their research papers. Then, in their papers they should include a strong thesis statement that states the paper's opinion on the chosen subject, three or four points that support that opinion, and research evidence that backs up those points. The student should also write a catchy introduction and conclusion.
