Write a Term Paper

Written by: Free Term Papers

Instructors often require students to write term papers as part of a normal curriculum. Although students usually do not gleefully meet the challenge, viewing the assignment from the instructor's perspective may help the student benefit more from it.

Instructors do not assign term papers for pleasure: if each student has to write a term paper, the instructor ends up reading dozens of papers each semester. Instead, instructors assign them in order to help students increase their critical thinking skills. Students who write term papers must read vast amounts of material on their chosen subjects and decide which sources are valuable for which point in the paper, and this activity requires the student to develop a keen, objective sense of research viability. The student who pays attention to personal progress will realize that term papers for early semesters are much less confident than term papers for semesters closer to graduation, because the student will have developed a voice of authority in handling and evaluating research.

In addition, instructors assign term papers in order to help students improve their writing skills. In spite of having spent many years in the education system, most people do not learn how to write well until they begin to receive feedback consistently on their writing, and each semester's term papers provide a new occasion for instructors to evaluate their students' writing. This may be a painful process, but the student will improve over time, which will build his or her confidence for performing writing tasks in all areas of life. The student who has to write a term paper who does not feel comfortable with the act of forming sentences and paragraphs may consult his or her professor, the university's writing laboratory, or the university library's help desk, each of which may be able to provide unexpectedly helpful resources.

Above all, the student must remember that the instructor who assigned the term paper is willing to answer any questions. Instructors want their students to achieve the maximum benefit from their paper writing experience.
