Term papers are term-length projects that give students the opportunity to delve deeply into a topic that relates to the course. The student must remember that the instructor intends the project to last the entire term, not just part of the term; the more time a student takes, the better term paper he or she will write. One's thoughts need time to incubate before one can form them into a graceful term paper.
Term papers usually require some form of research; however, at times the student can exercise a great deal of creativity in the choice of topic, argumentation, and writing. For example, sometimes the instructor wants to see each student's originality and critical thinking skills. The student who writes creatively should neither shy away from expressing original thoughts nor believe that creativity is a license to write ambiguously or irrationally. The student must present a compelling case to the instructor. If the student writes a term paper completely from personal experience or ideas, he or she should explain every point thoroughly without including thoughts that have nothing to do with the subject at hand.
At times instructors require term papers that almost exclusively present research. The student who reports on research should read far more than the required number of sources; the more sources a student reads, the more he or she will be able to draw informed, well-thought conclusions from the material. The student who performs too little research, on the other hand, will feel that every source he or she read is necessary for the paper, even if a source is not credible or useful; this strategy often produces forced, ill-conceived term papers.
The student who wishes to write an excellent term paper, then, should allow plenty of time for the preparation and development stages. This time will dramatically strengthen the writing of the paper, whether the student writes creatively or whether he or she primarily reports on research.
