Term Papers on Music

Written by: Free Term Papers

Normally when an instructor assigns a term project in a music course, that project results in the recital of a piece of music. Therefore, the instructor who assigns a term paper on music must have a specific reason for doing so and will probably give specific directions on the assignment.

Instructors who assign term papers on music may want students to delve into the history behind a piece of music, such as the biography of the composer or the underlying political or social circumstances. Instructors may also assign term papers on music that survey a certain period in music. The student can write this type of paper as a research term paper, including a clear thesis and a great deal of research that supports that thesis. The student should listen carefully to the piece of music with which the term paper deals; he or she should not rely on books and articles to provide all the information about the topic. Listening to the music carefully can help the student draw original conclusions about it, which he or she can incorporate into the paper.

An instructor may also require a term paper on music theory. This type of paper would be much more technical, and the instructor would probably express specific directions and expectations for the paper; however, some possibilities for such a paper would be the connection between music and mathematics, the presence of certain modes in a given culture, or the psychological effect of a certain scale.

Finally, an instructor may assign a term paper on music so that the student may reflect critically on a piece of music. The student may prepare a reflection paper that emphasizes comparison and contrast, performance technique, symbolism inherent in the music, or any other topic that seems plausible. The student should be careful to express himself or herself as an objective observer and should not devote too much of the paper to expressing personal emotions on the piece.
