Term Papers on Immigration

Written by: Free Term Papers

Students who are taking courses in history, the social sciences, or current events may choose to write term papers on immigration. Immigration has been a constant throughout American history, and the study of one of its aspects may prove to be quite fascinating.

Term papers on immigration may take either a diachronic or a synchronic approach. Diachronic papers discuss immigration over a period of time, such as studying the differences in waves of immigrants from the eighteenth century until the present day. Synchronic term papers discuss immigration during one point in time; such a term paper on immigration may study the effects of the Irish Potato Famine or of the disenfranchisement of various populations during World War II. Due to the length considerations of the term paper, the student who chooses a diachronic approach should try either to trace one specific aspect of immigration across a period of time or to survey that period's immigration in very broad strokes.

The most currently relevant term paper on immigration would study the rise or effects of undocumented populations in the United States in recent years. The student who covers this type of topic must limit the scope of the paper very narrowly. Good term papers on immigration for current events classes do not try to solve the entire crisis at once; rather, they focus on one extremely specific aspect of the crisis, such as the passing of a certain law, the effects of immigration on one border town, or a certain industry's dependence on the labor of undocumented populations.

A student who writes a term paper on immigration will conduct research through channels that are appropriate to the chosen topic. For example, if the student is writing a case study on the experience of illegal aliens in the United States, he or she may conduct a series of interviews. If the student is writing a paper for a current events class, he or she will read all available articles from recent news magazines and journals and will only rely on older research to fill in gaps in knowledge.
