Students may write term papers on AIDS for several different academic disciplines, such as biology, nursing, cultural studies, and counseling. Students may write term papers on AIDS even for courses that do not immediately relate to AIDS, such as literature or art courses. For example, one may write a term paper on the life and work of Michel Foucault, a prominent literary critic who was a victim of the disease.
First, the student should narrow the topic for a term paper on AIDS. The student should choose a topic that either relates directly to the course or a topic whose relevance to the course the student can prove. One should remember that instructors of university courses often value uniqueness and creativity in topic selection, so one should not hesitate at least to ask the instructor if an unusual topic may produce a viable term paper. If the student wants to write a term paper on AIDS but does not know how to narrow the topic further, he or she may ask the instructor for ideas or may try a brainstorming exercise. For example, one may write phrases such as "famous people who suffer from AIDS," "parts of the body AIDS targets," and "cultural practices that contribute to the spread of AIDS," and then he or she may ask friends or classmates to offer their ideas on each phrase. In this way, one may procure many ideas that he or she may not otherwise have obtained.
After selecting a topic for a term paper on AIDS, the student should conduct solid academic research on it. Solid academic research includes only accepting statistics from sources that use only well-known and well-respected methods, using medical data from the most recent sources available, and not building an argument on sources that are highly emotive or rhetoric-driven.
The student should clearly define whether the term paper will be argumentative or expository. If the paper is argumentative, the student should be careful to buttress every point of the argument with solid, verifiable evidence and not to use maudlin language.
