Students who write term papers for college should remember that their efforts never have to end with receiving a grade. If a term paper topic catches a student's attention, the student can always develop that topic into a more in-depth term paper, a bachelor's or master's thesis, or a dissertation. Unlike most term papers for high school, term papers for college contain a potential for continuity due to the student's pursuing a certain area of study. For example, the student may write a term paper for a survey course on American literature, rethink and rewrite that topic for a course on American novels, and then develop the topic extensively and create a senior capstone project from it.
Therefore, the student who writes a term paper for college should invest energy and effort in researching the topic thoroughly and thinking critically about it. If the student decides to continue researching that topic for another course or for a major project, he or she will realize that the first term paper's research has laid a strong foundation for further study. Therefore, the student should not write a term paper for college merely to get a grade; each term paper presents the student with new academic possibilities and new arenas of investigative potential.
If the student does decide to develop a term paper for college into another term paper or a more intensive project, he or she should follow a couple of principles in order to begin to create something new. First, the student should return to the primary object of study with fresh eyes. The student should try to see the subject in unique way. Second, he or she should reread the sources listed in the first paper's bibliography and then read every source that those research sources cite. From there, the student should be able to rethink the existing paper's idea and create a related idea for a new project.
The student who follows an interesting topic throughout the degree program often develops a keen expertise in that area, which only helps him or her succeed academically and professionally.
