At times students need extra assistance in grasping certain elements of term papers, such as topics, thesis statements, research citations, or format. Students in this type of situation may find it useful to view term paper samples, which can help them figure out solutions for their problem areas. Students may obtain term paper samples through asking the instructor, through inquiring at the help desk of the university library, or most easily through performing an Internet search.
If the instructor or the university library has recommended certain term paper samples, they probably represent good work that the student can emulate. However, term paper samples that come without express recommendation carry varying degrees of usefulness; some term paper samples that one finds may not be useful at all, because they may not be technically or mechanically strong.
Therefore, before depending on a term paper sample to provide good assistance, one should determine whether or not it is a solid example of a term paper. One may verify this through asking questions based on one's own knowledge of term paper requirements: Does the term paper use good grammar, spelling, and punctuation? Do all of its research citations appear in a similar format, containing the same type of information (title, author, publisher, etc.) in the same sequence? Does the paper's argument or presentation of information make sense? If the student does not feel knowledgeable enough to pass a sound judgment on the competence of the term paper sample, he or she should ask the instructor or the university's writing lab for help. Instructors appreciate students who put exceptional effort into their assignments, so they will probably be more than willing to answer the student's questions about the validity of a term paper sample.
If one determines that the term paper sample does represent strong academic work, one may then use it as a guide for learning how to write various elements of a term paper.
