A student creates a term paper outline in the prewriting stages of the project after having completed the majority of the research of the chosen topic. Students usually do not have to submit their term paper outlines for a grade; however, writing an outline will make the student’s term paper writing much easier, because an outline will help the student adeptly manage the enormous amount of information necessary to write a strong term paper. Therefore, the conscientious student develops a detailed outline before beginning to write in earnest.
A simple term paper outline includes the working thesis statement and the general points the student wants to make. Even an effort this small will ease the student’s writing, because it briefly shows the intended progression of the paper; in writing, the student will not wander aimlessly through the paper's argument.
However, the student will benefit from creating a much more detailed outline. The student should flesh out the general points of the outline, listing the evidence he or she intends to provide under each point, including original thoughts as well as information obtained through research. Under each point of evidence procured from research, the student should note the exact article, page number, and paragraph number where that piece of information appears; in doing so, the student will not have to waste valuable time during writing stages trying to remember where he or she found a certain datum.
Term paper outlines remove a great deal of the student’s stress by handling the information the student wants to use in the paper. The student no longer has to try to hold the information mentally while writing; he or she is free to focus on crafting the argument sentence by sentence, because the outline will remind him or her of the overarching points of the paper.
