One may write a term paper on leadership for a course in leadership studies or for a course that covers how to be a leader in a certain field. Because leadership is such a necessary and deliberate contribution to all aspects of society, students may legitimately write term papers on leadership for nearly all academic disciplines.
The student who has decided to write a term paper on leadership should first identify the needs of the course. For example, the course may emphasize political, religious, aesthetic, psychological, or sociological concerns, to name but a few, and the student should tailor his or her paper to relate to those concerns. The student should then identify the type of leadership he or she wishes to discuss, such as leadership by charisma, by the office one holds, or by the conferral of authority from one generation to the next. These two ideas in combination, such as "charismatic leadership in American politics" or "traditional leadership among religious groups," will cause the student to begin to narrow the topic effectively. The student has reached a good topic for a term paper on leadership when the idea is concrete and useful either to the concerns of the course or to the student's personal goals. For example, one who wants to become the executive director of a non-profit may write a term paper on how to lead as a visionary in spite of limited resources and manpower.
Students should be sure to research their term papers on leadership appropriately. One who writes a primarily expository paper, such as on the leadership style of a certain historical figure, may conduct most of the research through textual sources, but one who writes a paper that presents more of a "how-to" on leadership may want to interview leaders in the field or to survey the leaders' employees or adherents. The goal is to figure out and implement a method of researching the topic well in order to say something valuable about it.
