Term Paper on Immigration

Written by: Free Term Papers

One may consider writing a term paper on immigration for a number of different disciplines, such as history, sociology, geography, and political science. The key to writing a good term paper on immigration is to choose a topic that relates to the objectives of the course and to narrow it sufficiently to meet the length requirements of the assignment.

First, the student should choose a topic that fits well within the goals of the course. For example, for a sociology course, one may write a term paper on immigration that discusses the way new immigrant groups affect the culture of a certain town or city. Depending on the instructor's wishes, the student may not have to choose a topic that obviously coheres with the course; often in college classes students may choose any term paper topic as long as they can make an argument for its relevance to the course. For example, students may write term papers on immigration for courses in disciplines distant from the social sciences, such as courses in medicine. The goal in that case is to argue a link between immigration and the course, such as the way undocumented individuals in the United States affect the health care system.

Second, students who are writing term papers on immigration should narrow their topics enough so that the papers can discuss them thoroughly. Students should get in the habit of narrowing their topics far more than they think necessary, because a narrow topic will lead to a focused discussion, which can then present a clearly stated, watertight argument. Students may limit their topics by creating a topic tree in which each term is a subcategory of the previous term, as in this progression: (1) immigration to the United States, (2) immigration to Iowa, (3) immigration and the need for inexpensive agricultural labor in Iowa, (4) the conflict between government policies and the hiring practices of meat processing plants in Iowa, (5) the effects of ICE raids on the economy of small agricultural towns in Iowa. The fourth or fifth term of the topic tree should present a nicely delimited topic upon which to write a term paper.
