A term paper on ethics normally discusses a current ethical debate, such as stem cell research or capital punishment, from the perspective of the ethical systems that the student has studied in the course. Term papers on ethics are highly creative, and students must come to strong, well-conceived opinions about their topics and argue them convincingly in an original way.
The student who writes a mediocre term paper on ethics will probably have fallen into one of two traps: either the student will have provided too much research information without enough argumentation, or he or she will have touted personal belief too strongly without a solid basis in research.
In order to write a good term paper on ethics and to avoid both traps, the student should allow plenty of time for the development of the term paper. The student should read everything available on the chosen topic, but he or she should also take time to digest and critically evaluate each research source's position. This critical evaluation is key: many term papers on ethics have turned out poorly because the student only set out to prove his or her preconceived notions on the subject and did not listen to or consider the oppositional opinions. In critical evaluation, however, the student weighs the source's argument and evidence against those of other sources, watching for logical flaws, informational lacunae, propaganda, and overly emotional language. The student should place a lower value on any sources that rely on any of these aforementioned vices to persuade the reader.
In a similar way, the student should avoid these vices in the writing of a term paper on ethics. The student should write an argument that persuades the reader through verifiable information, valid analogies, strong rhetoric, and an appeal to a definite system of ethics. The student who researches the selected topic well, forms an opinion on that topic based on the research, and argues that opinion fairly and rationally will write an excellent term paper on ethics.
