One may consider writing a term paper on child abuse for many courses, including particularly those in the social sciences. The student who wishes to write a term paper on child abuse should narrow the topic sufficiently, research it thoroughly, and write about it using an academic tone and style.
First, the student should limit the topic of child abuse sufficiently so that the paper can discuss a whole, highly precise idea rather than fragments of an overly large idea. For example, the student may choose to discuss the abuser's brain chemistry compared to normal chemical levels; the immediate emotional effects of abuse on children of a certain age; or the correlation between a certain external factor, such as alcohol, and the likelihood of abuse.
The student may then choose to discuss this topic through ordinary research methods, such as reading books and articles, or to employ creative research methods, such as interviewing victims and perpetrators. The student should be sure to obtain at least a few recent research sources, because child abuse, being a pressing issue in current society, constantly generates new research.
Because child abuse is such a sensitive topic, writers of term papers on child abuse will have to deal with some special writing concerns. Although it is likely that everyone who reads the paper will agree that child abuse is an abominable act, the student should not give way to emotionalism or sensationalism. Rather, the writer of a term paper on child abuse should keep the argument as objective and as professional as possible, because ideas that arise out of verifiable fact impress an academic reader much more than propaganda does. If the student has difficulty deciding when an argument has crossed the threshold into sensationalism, he or she should write a draft that excises all adjectives out of the original draft. While this draft may appear overly stark, it may help the student understand the tone of purely objective, journalistic term papers on child abuse, and it may help the student choose adjectives more judiciously for the final draft.
