A student may write a term paper on abortion for any of quite a few academic disciplines, such as biology, physiology, ethics, history, religion, or current events. The student should focus the term paper on an aspect of abortion that relates to the course; for example, a term paper on abortion for a history class could deal with Roe v. Wade extensively but probably would not discuss physiological concerns in any great detail.
Once the student has identified how abortion relates to the course, he or she should limit the discussion of abortion even further by identifying several possible subtopics and choosing one. For example, the student who wants to write on abortion for a current events class could choose to focus on prominent pro-choice advocates, prominent pro-life advocates, abortion clinic bombings, or other major demonstrations. Because the goal of a term paper is to offer new information or convince the reader of one’s position, students should take care to focus their term papers on abortion keenly. The student who wishes to convince a reader of his or her position on a volatile topic such as abortion has to write clearly, powerfully, and persuasively, using the best evidence and the best argumentation to their fullest effect. One can do this most successfully when working with an extremely limited topic, conveying the full spectrum of one's thought about that topic; one will not have to leave out important details due to length requirements.
Students must also take care to write their term papers on abortion in a professional way, not overly forcing their emotions on the reader. The student will have the most success in convincing the reader of the validity of the paper's position by presenting the evidence well and allowing the reader to come to his or her own conclusion. The student should not insult the reader by demanding, through excessively emotional language, that the reader agree with the opinions of the paper.
