One’s term paper format depends largely on one’s academic discipline. Different academic disciplines require different term paper formats; for example, students usually write English term papers in MLA style and psychology term papers in APA style.
However, no matter in which discipline the student is writing, he or she can look up the style manual’s preferences on certain key elements of term paper format; these include the presentation of the paper’s identifying information, the form a student uses to cite research sources, and the way a student lists those sources in a group at the end of the paper. First, term papers begin with some type of identification of the paper’s title, the student, the instructor for whom the student is writing the term paper, and the date; sometimes this information comprises a separate cover page, but sometimes the student lists these things at the top of the first page and does not include a cover page. Second, term papers require a very specific style of source citation. This style includes the identifying information for the source, such as author, title, date of publication, publisher, and page number; this style will vary depending on the type of source, such as whether it is a book, article, or web page. Third, the student must list all these research sources in a group at the end of the paper so that the instructor can easily reference them; this group may be a bibliography, a works cited, or a works consulted. Usually the student alphabetizes these sources by author.
Although the nuances of the various term paper formats may seem bewildering, the student must learn the term paper format of his or her discipline and use it well. The student should not think that the instructor does not pay attention to these format details; on the contrary, these are details that the instructor continually uses in the grading rubric. The consistent application of these term paper format details will significantly increase the academic value of any term paper.
