A student writes a term paper essay for a class that values subjective responses to the course material, such as a class in the fine arts. A term paper essay differs requires some research but will ultimately focus on one's reflection on that information, not the information itself.
However, students should not consider their term paper essays to be casual writing. Term paper essays are serious projects that last an entire term, and even if a good deal of the material comes from the writer’s thoughts, the writer should not procrastinate the development of those thoughts.
The student who wishes to write a good term paper essay may follow a few guiding principles. First, the student should identify the topic and research it as thoroughly as possible. For example, for an art history class, the student may choose a piece of artwork and research what the artist said about it, what the artist's contemporaries said about it, and how critics have analyzed it. After having read and digested that input, the student should reach some interpretive conclusions about the piece of artwork.
In writing the paper, then, the student evaluates what others have thought and makes a compelling case in favor of his or her own conclusions. The student does not fill the paper with phrases such as “I think” and “in my opinion”; instead, the student leaves out those first-person pronouns, states his or her opinions as if they were fact, and provides all the evidence necessary to support them. The student will discuss the thoughts of others as he or she disagrees with them. This is different from a research term paper, in which the student only states others’ thoughts.
Term paper essays provide the student a chance to practice effective argumentation. The student must collect enough evidence and use it in an appropriate enough way to convince the audience that the paper's position is correct.
