A research term paper is the delight of the student who loves the library. Usually, research term papers require that students provide plenty of citations from relevant books and articles; therefore, the student who wishes to write a good research term paper should plan to spend a fair amount of time in the library. The student should be aware that the Internet, although easy to use, often does not provide credible information; therefore, the library, which contains mostly peer-reviewed material, should receive top priority in the student’s research endeavors.
The library has several resources with which novice term paper writers should familiarize themselves immediately. First, the library’s online catalog can provide the student’s first entry into the research topic. The student can find out which books the professors and the librarians thought best discussed a given topic. Second, the student can ask the librarian if the library has a subscription to a relevant research database; most academic disciplines have at least one database that lists the most current articles in that discipline, and those databases often even provide the full text for some of those articles. Third, the library probably subscribes to several hard-copy bibliographies in which the student can search for his or her topic. Far from being obsolete, these bibliographies often list articles and other information that one cannot find on the Internet. The librarian or student worker on duty can help the student learn to use these resources. Finally, the library can interlibrary loan (ILL) any book or article that the student needs that the library does not have. This service usually invokes a nominal fee and a waiting period of one to three weeks; therefore, the student should certainly submit all requests far enough ahead of time that he or she can receive the material, read it, and incorporate it into the research term paper.
An awareness and good use of these four resources can help students prepare to write thorough research term papers.
