Outline for Term Paper

Written by: Free Term Papers

Usually one does not have to submit an outline for term paper projects for a grade, but an outline often provides much-needed support for the student who is writing a term paper. Outlines for term papers may be simple or extensive, and students should think of them as investments: one receives dividends from the outline in proportion to the energy he or she exerts in its creation. A well-conceived outline for term paper projects can guide the whole process and keep the student from following unproductive rabbit trails.

Students who want to write outlines for term papers should begin by deciding whether they want to outline the entire process or only the writing process. An outline for the entire process may include the types of research to conduct; lists of bibliographies to check; deadlines for completing research, writing, and editing; and lists of instructional websites or manuals with which to verify the accuracy of style and format. An outline for term paper projects in their entirety can be quite useful, because the student will always know what the next step is.

Outlines for term paper writing are also extremely helpful. The student may benefit from an act as simple as sketching out the basic points of the argument on a piece of scrap paper; even such a simple visual tool will help the student remember the intended direction of the argument. However, if the student has time and energy to create a more extensive outline, the writing will go much more quickly and smoothly. Detailed outlines for term papers include the thesis statement, the basic points of the argument, the evidence that supports each point, and bibliographic references for each piece of evidence. The value in writing an outline that includes bibliographic material is that once the student begins writing, he or she does not have to wonder where to find that piece of evidence. Term paper writing often involves having many open books spread across a table, and having an outline that tells which book contains the necessary piece of information dramatically reduces the time spent searching.
