The student in such a situation should pay special attention to formatting and to ensuring that he or she has submitted the proper file. For example, when instructors open online term papers, the footnotes may have gone awry, or special fonts, such as diacritical marks, may have mutated into other characters. Students should be sure that they are submitting their work in a type of file that is compatible with the instructor's software. Additionally, students often save several copies of their work throughout the writing process; they should ensure that they are sending the final draft of their online term papers and not a preliminary draft. In order to avoid sending the wrong file, students may devise a way to clearly identify the preliminary drafts, such as including a numeral at the beginning of the file name.
