Students often write music term papers in order to more fully explore the history or theory behind pieces of music that they are studying. The student who has to write a music term paper can write from any of several categories, and he or she will perhaps have to consider some formatting details that are specific to the field.
First, the student can write a biographical music term paper on a composer who fits within the scope of the course. Biographical music term papers can have varying emphases, such as the way the composer fits into his or her musical period, the events in his or her life that caused various compositions, or the composer's psychological motivations and obstacles.
Second, the student can write a historical music term paper, which discusses the identifying features of a period of music, the sources from which it drew, and the subsequent musical movements that it influenced. The student should be careful to delimit such a term paper sufficiently; for example, he or she may want to study only the relationship between a certain musical period and its immediate predecessor.
Third, students can write papers on music theory, discussing a certain key concept that relates to the course. Students who write music term papers on points of theory should be sure that they know and correctly use any necessary jargon; terminology that is specific to a certain field can often convey much more concise, precise information to the knowledgeable reader than lay terminology. Students can gain knowledge of jargon simply by looking up unfamiliar words that they find in their research material.
Music term papers may have some special considerations that other types of term papers may not have. If the student needs to include a piece of music as an example, he or she may choose to include a copy of the sheet music in an appendix or a CD of the piece of music as an attachment to the term paper. Students who wish to include non-textual material in their music term papers should ask their instructors what is the appropriate format.
