MLA is a writing style that language departments often use. It guides the student through the correct use of words, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; moreover, it determines several key elements of term paper format. An MLA term paper can discuss any topic; its only criterion is to follow the style rules of MLA.
One of the hallmarks of MLA term papers appears in the style of documentation, which is the way a student gives credit to the research sources that the paper uses. Whereas term papers in other writing styles may use footnotes or endnotes to cite sources, MLA term papers use parenthetical citations within the body of the text. These allow for better flow in a term paper, because the reader does not have to glance down to the bottom of the page or flip to the last page of the paper to find out the source of the information. A parenthetical citation includes two things: a brief identifying marker, such as the author or a phrase of the title of the source, and a page number. The writer does not include a comma between those bits of information.
Another key component of the MLA term paper is the works cited page, which is similar to a bibliography. In a works cited page, the student provides the full identification for everything that appears in a parenthetical citation within the body of the term paper. The student may refer to the MLA style manual to find out the exact identification requirement and the exact sequence of the identifying data for the type of research source at hand. After completing all entries, the student alphabetizes them by author.
MLA term papers provide the reader with a straightforward, pleasant way of checking the paper's sources. Although the student may struggle at first with including the right information at the right place in the paper, he or she should exercise patience and make sure that the paper follows MLA style well. A paper that is consistent in its style carries much aesthetic appeal for the reader.
