A marketing term paper is a creative project in which the student identifies and hypothesizes about a problem that relates to the study of making products accessible, desirable, and affordable to consumers. Marketing term papers heavily emphasize research into current business and consumer affairs, but it is unlikely that a marketing term paper will be strictly expository; instead, the student will thoroughly research a marketing problem or issue and will argue in favor of a solution to that problem.
The first step is to identify the problem, which should relate directly to the subject matter of the course. As with any term paper, the student should narrow the topic choice enough so that he or she can discuss it adequately.
Second, the student should research the topic through all available means. Depending on the subject, this may require reading recent journal and magazine articles, searching for the topic in research databases, or analyzing surveys and other data. The student may even find it helpful to perform some primary research, such as conducting student surveys.
Third, the student must write the paper. Marketing term papers may necessitate special formatting considerations, such as the use of colored graphs or other charts and tables; all such graphics should be clear and understandable in the final printed copy of the term paper. Additionally, the student must make certain that the writing within the term paper advocates in favor of its thesis statement in the clearest, most persuasive way possible. Because the discipline revolves around convincing others of one's opinion on a product or a way of doing something, an implicit but very important task of marketing term papers is to convince readers of their positions.
Marketing students must learn how to present compelling, research-based, creative arguments, and the marketing term paper is a good practice arena. If the student has researched the problem thoroughly and believes strongly in the paper's thesis statement but still cannot write a persuasive paper, he or she should seek writing help through the instructor or through the university's English department.
