One may write an immigration term paper for a class in sociology, history, current events, or any of the social sciences. Immigration term papers can provide the student with an excellent opportunity to delve deeply into one of the major issues facing the United States, and a creative exploration of the subject may produce unique and innovative potential solutions.
The student should choose a workable, narrow topic for an immigration term paper. Many options present themselves immediately. For example, the student may cover immigration in a certain geographical area, such as a state or city; immigration as it effects the economy; immigration in history (such as an immigration term paper that highlights the influx of a certain population to the United States); or the legislation surrounding immigration, to name just a few. The student should narrow the topic as much as possible, because a highly specialized topic will lead to a very in-depth, detailed discussion, which can produce an excellent term paper.
Students should conduct research appropriate to their immigration term papers. In order to get a grasp on the basic concepts within their topics, they may choose to begin by reading popular level newspaper articles or textbook chapters. Then they may progress to more arcane, specialized, or terminology-laden journal articles and books. If students encounter terms or concepts that they do not immediately understand, they should perform some tangential research in order to learn that material.
For immigration term papers, students may consider conducting primary research to add to what they have read. Primary research may include interviewing people who have immigrated to the United States or who have worked in immigration law; it may also include drawing conclusions from information contained in the public record or from information gathered through taking a survey. If students do perform any primary research, they should carefully document where, how, and when they gathered the material and should set it in as permanent a state as possible so that others may access that material; this may include archiving transcripts of interviews or carefully collating all survey information into its own document.
