Essays and Term Paper

Written by: Free Term Papers

Essays and term paper projects normally share some similarities, but each also has unique qualities of which the student should be aware.

First, essays and term paper projects both ordinarily represent a large portion of the semester's work, and the student should therefore invest a great deal of effort in both. Essays and term papers often require some research; research term papers will require more sources than creative essays, but in either assignment, the student does need to be highly knowledgeable on the chosen subject. Additionally, because essays and term papers constitute a large portion of the course's grade, the student should be careful to write and edit each one carefully.

Second, good essays and term papers depend on students' original thinking; in both essay and term paper projects, students should critically interact with their research sources and their own ideas, not espousing positions that they cannot support with personal conviction as well as with research evidence. In order to think critically about the subject, the student should read a wide variety of sources, each of which will agree and disagree with other sources on various points. The student should not accept one source's argument in its entirety without examining it point for point; one of the privileges of writing an essay and term paper is that the writer can choose to espouse a combination of several positions.

On the other hand, essays and term papers differ in that the former focuses on the student's own thoughts, while the latter normally focuses more closely on objective, research-based argumentation. The former may allow the student to use first-person pronouns, depending on the instructor's preferences, but the latter does not allow first-person pronouns unless specifically stated otherwise. Additionally, essays may have a wider subject range; for example, depending on the nature of the assignment, the student may be able to discuss personal experiences or beliefs. By contrast, term papers usually discuss a subject that is objectively verifiable or deniable from a wide variety of research input.
