In an essay term paper, a student expresses personal opinion on a chosen subject. One often writes essay term papers for courses in the fine arts, in which the instructor wants to know the students' opinions, or for composition courses, in which the instructor wants to gauge the students' writing capabilities.
Students who have not written many term papers may experience a sense of relief in the assignment to write an essay term paper. This type of paper often involves less obscure or complicated thesis statements and less arcane research than other types of papers, although the student still must take care to write well and substantively.
The student should first choose a subject upon which he or she has an opinion or is willing to develop one. If the student chooses an unfamiliar subject, he or she should perform some preliminary research in order to learn the basics before formulating an opinion. Second, the student should write down the opinion and the reasons for its validity.
Third, the student should conduct some research in order to solidify the opinion and possibly garner support for it. For example, if the term paper deals with a certain piece of literature, the research may provide some interesting interpretations of that piece of literature with which the paper may interact. The goal in this step is for the student to come to a more informed opinion before writing the term paper. The student need not feel pressured to change his or her opinion based on the research, because essay term papers give writers carte blanche to state and defend their opinions; rather, he or she should just be aware of and able to discuss other ways of looking at the subject.
Finally, the student must write the paper. Although the instructor may allow the use of first-person pronouns in certain essay term papers, the student should strictly limit the use of phrases such as "I think" and "in my opinion." Because the student genuinely believes that the chosen opinion is valid, he or she should claim full authority to assert that opinion as fact.
