An education term paper discusses a topic that is relevant to a student's learning how to teach others a certain subject. Whereas other term papers may discuss a topic that is academically interesting but that may not relate to the student's performing a vocational task, education term papers most frequently focus on practical knowledge that applies directly to the classroom. To illustrate the contrast, whereas history term papers may discuss a certain aspect of a battle in World War II, education term papers may discuss a certain strategy for classroom management.
Students who are writing education term papers may blend primary observations with secondary research; that is, students may write education term papers on what they have noticed from observing classrooms, using books and journal articles that they have read to support their points. The student who is writing an education term paper should take care to use the appropriate ratio of primary to secondary research; the instructor may expect an education term paper to depend largely on the student's own reflections on a given experience, or he or she may expect a more theoretical, research-oriented paper. The student should also determine whether the instructor expects the education term paper to gather support for its conclusions through an emphasis on anecdotal evidence, such as brief case studies, or whether the instructor expects the paper's argument to rely on research that presents data, statistics, and hard facts.
In order to perform the best outside research with which to support their own conclusions, students should try to obtain the most recent books and journal articles that relate to their subjects. Education strategies change frequently, and sources that are even a few years old may be hopelessly out of date. Students may discover the most useful sources through browsing respected education research databases, through asking their instructors, or through consulting the help desk at the university library.
