A custom term paper is a paper that one produces specifically for a given assignment, in contrast to re-submitting papers that one has written for previous courses. Instructors usually assume that all papers are custom term papers.
However, custom term papers do not have to be completely unique. For example, one may reuse an idea from a previously written term paper by performing fresh or more extensive research, altering the thesis statement, or applying the idea to a new discipline (such as applying a literature idea to a course in philosophy). Additionally, if the student has found an example term paper that seems highly compelling, he or she may pursue its idea or thesis statement in a new paper; in this case, the student should be careful to add something unique to the argument, such as a few research sources that the previously written term paper did not use.
Furthermore, one may obtain significant help on a term paper but still consider it to be a custom term paper. For example, the student may seek help in forming an idea, determining which research sources are available and/or authoritative, writing a thesis statement, synthesizing the information, and editing the term paper. The phrase "custom term paper" does not require that the student never ask a question and never obtain outside information, opinions, and guidance; indeed, such utterly independent term papers often are mediocre or poor, because the student did not obtain adequate help to overcome the paper's insufficiencies or inaccuracies. However, the student does take responsibility for seeking the appropriate type of help and for making the final decisions on all matters concerning the term paper; he or she is integral to the development of the custom term paper.
In summary, students who write custom term papers do not have to reinvent the wheel for every assignment. They are free to reuse old ideas in new ways or freshly to pursue ideas found in other people's work, and they should obtain all the help necessary to understand the assignment and create a good term paper.
