A college term paper differs from a high school term paper in that the student writer has greater freedom and greater responsibility. The instructor may allow students to choose more controversial, specialized, or obscure topics than a high school teacher often would; even if the instructor provides a topic list, the student can often obtain the instructor's approval to pursue an original topic choice that is relevant to the course. The student, however, has a responsibility to keep abreast of the requirements and to provide more in-depth research and stronger argumentation, and the instructor usually grades a college term paper more strictly than a teacher would grade a high school term paper.
In college, the instructor hands out a syllabus in the first session of each course, or he or she posts it on the college website and expects students to print it out for themselves. The student must keep this syllabus in a prominent, easy-to-access place for the entire length of the semester. Within its presentation of all important logistical information about the course, the syllabus lists the instructor's term paper requirements. The student must read these requirements carefully before beginning the college term paper, and he or she should refer back to them whenever doubts arise regarding the nature or scope of the term paper.
The syllabus tells students important details about their college term papers. It tells the due date and late penalties; it usually also gives the instructor's preferences for the term paper, such as the number of research sources necessary, the length of the finished term paper, and the documentation style. The instructor may not explicitly state that he or she requires a coherent, grammatically sound term paper, but college term papers demand that students write in standard English, with as few spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors as possible.
