Chemistry Term Paper

Written by: Free Term Papers

Because chemistry classes usually focus on a combination of textbook work and laboratory work, the instructor who assigns a chemistry term paper probably has a specific reason for doing so. Perhaps the instructor wants the students to explore an important event or person in scientific history, perhaps the instructor wants to hear the students' thoughts on a certain experiment they conducted, or perhaps the instructor simply wants the students to discuss a scientific topic in a term paper for the purpose of integrating one's scientific thinking with one's writing skills. Whatever the reason, the student should ascertain immediately what the instructor's purpose is in assigning chemistry term papers.

Finding out the instructor's wishes for the term paper may possibly clear up whatever doubts the student may have about topic selection, because the instructor may have a specific topic in mind, such as an extended lab report on a given experiment. If the student has the option to choose a topic, however, he or she may choose from several basic areas. First, the student may write a chemistry term paper on a topic in the history or the future of the field. The student may study the influence a certain experiment exerted over the field, or he or she may study the research that is currently under way in order to improve knowledge of some scientific area. Second, the student may write a laboratory report on an experiment that he or she conducted; this type of chemistry term paper may include personal reflection on the experiment if the instructor allows it. Third, the student may choose to write a straightforward research term paper on some topic in chemistry, such as a certain element or a certain piece of laboratory equipment.

Instructors do not usually assign chemistry term papers without a reason. The student should ask the instructor what his or her expectations are and should then write with those expectations in mind.
