Chemistry Term Paper Topic

Written by: Free Term Papers

Although writing may not be the chemistry student's primary area of expertise, a term paper may provide the student with invaluable experience in converting his or her isolated scientific data into sentences and paragraphs, which communicate more effectively with people have not studied the target subject or performed the target experiments for themselves. The chemistry student who is nervous about writing a term paper can follow a planned progression through topic selection, research, organization of material, writing, and editing. The first step is to choose a viable chemistry term paper topic.

Chemistry term paper topics often deal with laboratory results. The student may, for example, spend a semester running experiments on a certain element or compound and write a term paper to report on those experiments. The student must remember that the term paper is only worth as much as the experiments; if the experiments consistently failed or if they never delivered reproducible results, the student will not be able to fudge that data to create a useful term paper.

Another possible chemistry term paper topic is to research and write about a landmark experiment, invention, or scientist. The student should attempt to answer every question on the subject before concluding research; therefore, the student should sufficiently limit that topic so that the research area is manageable, and he or she should keep track of all questions that arise and discover their answers. Chemistry is a discipline that teaches its students to be systematic thinkers, so the student should learn to identify the gaps in his or her knowledge and to devise methods of filling those gaps.

A third class of chemistry term paper topics combines the previous two: the student may attempt to reproduce published laboratory results and comment on their accuracy and/or reproducibility. In choosing this type of chemistry term paper topic, the student does the field a great favor by proving the value of an experiment; the student serves as a peer-reviewer, who upholds and maintains academic standards of excellence.
