Biology Term Paper Topic

Written by: Free Term Papers

The student who enjoys biology will have a pleasant experience developing a biology term paper topic. The goal of a biology term paper is to strengthen one's knowledge of the life sciences; therefore, any subject that has a bearing on the life sciences may produce an excellent biology term paper topic.

The student's first task is to identify the scope of the course. If the course has a primary focus, such as microorganisms, diseases in mammals, or biology at the cellular level, the student should limit the choice of topic to that focus.

Second, the student must select a subject for study within the course's focus. If the student cannot identify a subject that could produce an interesting term paper, he or she may find it useful to read through the index of the course's primary textbook; textbook indices can often help students generate innovative biology term paper topics through the power of suggestion.

Third, students must convert their general areas of study into bona fide biology term paper topics. The student can do this by making a list of sentences that say something about the subject. These sentences can become thesis statements later in the writing process; at this stage, the student's goal is to choose something to say about the subject. The student should not write sentences that depend on linking verbs such as, "Mitochondria are…" or "A baboon is…"; rather, the student should write sentences that include dependent clauses, active verbs, and concrete nouns, as in the following sentence: "Because of the lack of large predators on the Midwestern plains, deer are flourishing to the point of becoming a nuisance." As one can see, this type of sentence sets up the student to write not just about deer but rather about the relationship between deer, large predators, and humans. This type of sentence, which seeks to make a claim or an assertion about the subject, provides the student with a direction for the term paper and becomes the biology term paper topic.
